TASEK VARSITI REVIVAL
Tasek Varsiti is a man-made lake, built when University of Malaya was established. Over the year the lake and its surrounding environment has gone through many changes, often at the expense of the lake. A project codenamed ReviVaL (Revive Varsity Lake) was mooted in 2013, resulting in the lake being preserved as a heritage and reintroduced as the heart of University of Malaya.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & RESEARCH
Project ReviVaL began in 2013, with community engagement and six months of doing research on point-source & nonpoint source pollution plus water quality monitoring (both in lab and through citizen science).
FIXING & LIFE
The initiatives continues with fixing the lake and at the end of it, life such as ducks, geese and local fish were introduced. In 2014, the lake was reopened and community members was given a chance to swim in the lake.
ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF A LAKE
Under the purview of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development) and Department of Development and Estate Maintenance in collaboration with our team, improvements and maintenance around the lake were continually made.
OPEN CLASSROOM
Our dream is for the lake and its surrounding to be repurpose as an open classroom, where students and researchers can conduct exciting field study, with spaces being fully utilized for the benefit of us and biodiversity alike.
